Enjoying the site?

Word Aware is a structured whole school approach to promote the vocabulary development of all children. Focussed on whole class learning, the resource is of particular value for those who start at a disadvantage – including children with Developmental Language Disorder, Special Educational Needs and those who speak English as an additional language, but it will extend the word learning of all students. This approach is full of practical and inspiring ideas that can be easily applied by busy classroom practitioners to develop both spoken and written vocabulary.

Educator Appraisal
This was a fun and engaging resource with lots of activities and strategies to choose from. As well as improving vocab for children, it can help to promote social interactions in the classroom. However, the games and some of the activities could be distracting for pupils and have limited scope with a big time and resource commitment from the teacher.

Evidence Rating
The evidence available utilises large samples and multiple sites. While qualitative evaluations and feedback from teachers and parents is positive about the use of Word Aware, data regarding improvements in vocabulary is mixed and does not show consistent significant results.
