Educator Appraisal

Protective behaviour resource teaches children and young people to recognise unsafe situations and encourages them to respond appropriately. It encourages them to build personal boundaries and, through open communication, learn to say no to uncomfortable or dangerous situations. I like that it builds resilience and self-esteem, helping children learn to trust their feelings and make informed decisions, which will benefit them throughout their lives. I didn't like that, for some children it might raise anxiety or fear, especially in those with previous experiences of trauma. The effectiveness of the resource depends on the quality of delivery by trained staff or educators, which may lead to misunderstanding, trivialization, or dismissal of important safety concepts.

Evidence Rating

Protective Behaviours was developed by Peg West in the 1970's and has since been implemented on a nationwide scale in Australia. Research has shown it's effective, however due to the scope of its acceptance it was not possible to find a study with a control group who had not been taught it before hand.
