Learning About Neurodiversity at School (LEANS)

×

Enjoying the site?

A free multi-session curriculum for teachers in mainstream primary schools to introduce pupils aged 8-11 years to the concept of neurodiversity, and how it impacts experiences at school. The LEANS curriculum introduces neurodiversity concepts, and explores how they impact primary school experiences. Importantly, LEANS shows how we can hold a positive attitude towards neurodiversity, while also recognising the challenges faced by many children in school.

Educator Appraisal
LEANS is a one-stop-shop for teaching about neurodiversity to children. Teaching about neurodviersity to the whole class can be overlooked, so communicating it in a way that children can understand is really beneficial for how students approach their neurodivergent peers. Having resources to help teachers communicate with parents will help to reduce teacher burden. The resource is free, and the developers are happy for their resource to be shared. The only problem with this is that it scope looks more focussed towards ASD and ADHD, rather than the wider neurodivergent community. This multi-session curriculum will be really useful for teachers if there is time to integrate it into the curriculum.

Evidence Rating
This evidence is only available as a pre-print, meaning it is yet to be peer-reviewed. It shows from observational data that the resource helps to improve attitudes and increase positive behaviours by individuals, but the study fails to use appropriate measures before- and after the intervention.
